Jayalalithaa takes stock of law and order in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday held a meeting with her cabinet colleagues and senior officials to take stock of the prevailing law and order situation in the state.

Those who attended the meeting include ministers O Panneerselvam (finance), Natham R Viswanathan (power and prohibition), R Vaithialingam (housing), chief secretary K Gnanadesikan, home secretary Apurva Varma, director general of police Ashok Kumar, DGP (law and order) T Rajendran and inspector general (intelligence) Davidson Desavirtham.

The meeting was held at a time when the state was witnessing agitations and protests after Gandhian Sasi Perumal died during an anti- protest in Marthandam demanding closure of a Tasmac outlet.

A protest programme at Kalingapatti, the hometown of MDMK leader Vaiko, turned violent on Sunday with the agitators ransacking a Tasmac outlet and police resorting to lathicharge and firing teargas.

The meeting also assumes significance as it was held on the eve of a state-wide bandh called by political parties. MDMK, VCK and MMK have given the bandh call, and DMDK, BJP, Congress and AAP have extended their support to it.

DMK will hold demonstrations across the state on August 10 demanding prohibition.
